Why We're Different

The Green Gram is a Community Benefit Society. Our goal is to enable people to reduce their reliance on single use plastic packaging, and to support local environmental and social projects by sharing the profits we make.

The Green Gram is owned by its members who have purchased one or more shares in the society. Members elect the management committee and vote on how profits are shared within the local community. You do not need to be a member to shop with us - we're here for everyone!

In addition to the management committee, there is a part-time paid manager and a team of volunteers who serve our customers. We aim to make plastic-free shopping easy and affordable. We decant the products for you, so there's no need to worry about spilling anything or making a mess!

How We Started

The Green Gram began life as Gardner’s Zero Waste; a mobile refill shop set up by Alderholt resident Jo Anderson in August 2019. With a nod to her great great grandfather, William Gardner, who owned a dairy and grocery shop in Fulham in the early 1900s, Jo and her trailer built a loyal customer base of people passionate about reducing their dependence on single-use plastic.

With demand for plastic-free products increasing and very little space in the trailer to spare, Jo convinced several of her customers to join her in forming the steering group for The Green Gram. After an initial share offer to raise funds, the shop opened in May 2022 at 4 Roman Quay off Fordingbridge High Street. The local community was really supportive and enthusiastic from the start and the shop went from strength to strength.

After just 12 months it was clear that we were outgrowing the space at Roman Quay and bigger premises were sought. Our second share offer was launched in August 2023 and we opened our current premises at 23 High Street in October 2023, a few yards up the road from Roman Quay.
